Compression garments do much more than keep you comfortable throughout the day. They facilitate the flow of blood and lymph fluid to prevent those fluids from building up and causing serious disorders like chronic venous disease and lymphedema. But these compression garments are only effective if they’re worn correctly. ThedaCare At Home carries compression garments from trusted brands, and our goal is to make sure you’re wearing your garments correctly, so they provide the benefit you need. So, here are the most frequent questions we hear when it comes to compression garments.
How Long Do I Need To Wear Compression Stockings?
Compression stockings should be worn throughout the entire day to give you the best benefits. We recommend putting them on as soon as you wake up in the morning and removing them before you go to sleep in the evening. You can choose to wear your compression garments at night, but it’s not necessary unless your doctor has advised you to do so.
How Do I Care for My Stockings?
Your compression garments can be washed and dried the same way you do any other load of laundry. When washing your compression stockings, make sure to use a detergent that is free of bleach and not to use fabric softener. When it’s time to throw your stockings in the dryer, set your machine on a low heat setting like you would for other delicate garments.
How Do I Put on My Compression Stockings?
Some key things to remember that will help you get your compression easier include:
- Only put on your stockings if your feet are dry. Wet feet create more resistance to the compression garment.
- Don’t bunch your socks up to put them on. Instead, place your sock on the end of your foot to the point that it is almost inside out, and then roll it up your foot while wearing application gloves.
