When you think “spring cleaning,” your mind might go to closets and garages—but don’t forget about your mobility scooter! Giving your scooter a little TLC this time of year can go a long way in keeping it running smoothly and safely. Just like your car or your home, it needs regular upkeep to stay in top shape.
Here are five simple (but important!) tips to help you clean and maintain your mobility scooter this spring.
1. Wipe It Down Regularly
Dust, dirt, and outdoor grime can build up quickly—especially after those muddy springtime errands. Use a soft cloth or microfiber towel to gently wipe down the frame, seat, and wheels.
- Avoid spraying water directly on electrical components.
- Use mild soap and water on tough spots, then dry thoroughly.
2. Check That Battery Health
Your scooter’s battery is its lifeline.
- Inspect the battery for signs of wear or corrosion.
- Use a dry cloth to clean any buildup.
- Don’t let it run all the way down unless your manufacturer recommends it.
- If it’s been a while, think about upgrading to a lithium battery for better performance and longer life.
3. Inspect the Tires & Wheels
Scooter tires may be smaller than car tires—but they’re just as important.
- Check for cracks, bald spots, or embedded debris like gravel or hair.
- Make sure tires are properly inflated.
- Clean and lubricate wheel bearings for a smoother ride.
4. Rust-Proof Your Ride
Spring weather = more moisture in the air.
- Use an anti-rust spray or WD-40 on exposed metal parts.
- Check for rust on bolts, screws, and the base frame, and clean it early to prevent damage.
5. Give the Electrical Connections a Look
Make sure everything’s plugged in and functioning properly.
- Tighten any loose connections.
- Use an electrical contact cleaner or safe lubricant to prevent corrosion.
